INFLUENCE OF ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES’STRIKE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OFUNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN ENUGU STATE

The study examined the influence of academic staff union of universities’ strike on the academic performance of university students in Enugu State. Two research questions guided the study while two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The researcher adopted descriptive survey research design in this study. The population for the study was 12,434 which consisted of 7,522 males and 4,912 female final year students of ESUT and University of Nigeria Nsukka. The sample of the study was 1,243 respondents which comprised 752 males and 491 females. In order to draw the sample size of the study, stratified, proportionate random sampling techniques were used. The instrument for data collection was a researcher structured questionnaire titled: “Influence of ASUU Strike on the Academic Performance of Students Questionnaire (IASUUSAPSQ)”. The instrument was validated by three research specialists. To ensure the reliability of the instrument Cronbach alpha method was used which yielded 0.81 for cluster A and 0.79 for cluster B with an overall reliability index of 0.80. The research questions were answered using mean with standard deviation, while the hypotheses were tested at .05 level of significance using t-test statistic. The findings of the study revealed that ASUU strike influence the academic performance of university students with regards to implementation of curriculum to a great extent and reading habits to a great extent. Based on the findings of the study, the researcher recommended that the Nigerian Government should employ the method of prompt dialogue and grant the requests of ASUU in time to prevent erosion and total breakdown of the educational sector especially in curriculum implementation
