Abstract

The study was on the impact of staff development programmes on teachers’ performance in secondary schools in Enugu State. Three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. A sample of 232 was drawn from a population of 2324 secondary school teachers in Enugu Education Zone. An 18-item researcher-made questionnaire titled; “Impact of Staff Development Programmes on Teachers Performance Questionnaire (ISDPTPQ)” was used as the instrument for data collection. The instrument was face-validated by three research experts, and had overall reliability of 0.73 which was ascertained with Cronbach Alpha. The research questions were answered with mean and standard deviation while the hypotheses were tested with z-test at 0.05 level of significance. The finding among others was that staff development programmes are crucial to the overall effectiveness and performance of teachers in secondary schools. It was recommended that Ministry of Education and State Secondary Education Board in Enugu State should on a regular basis organize staff development programmes for teachers. Such programmes should relate to the subject contents, use of teaching and lesson note preparation and delivery, classroom management and students’ evaluation, and also serving teachers should be encouraged to attend in-service training, conferences and workshops for self-improvement and this should be government sponsored.
