HIGHER EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION AS DETERMINANTS OF PRINCIPALS’ ORGANIZATION MANAGERIAL EFFECTIVENESS IN ENUGU STATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS.

Abstract

The study investigated the extent higher educational qualification determine principals’ effectiveness as organizational managers. In the supervision of instruction and management of staff personnel. Descriptive survey design was adopted. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. All the 291 principals of Enugu State Secondary Schools under PPSMB were chosen using purposive sampling techniques. The instrument for data collection was a researchers’ structured questionnaire titled, Determinants of Principals’ effectiveness questionnaire (DPEQ). The instrument was validated by three experts. A Cronbach alpha reliability co-efficient was used to test the reliability of the instrument, which yielded indices of 0.87 and 0.86 for clusters A and B respectively. The instrument was administered by the researchers and five research assistants. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while t-test statistics was used to test the null hypotheses at .05 level of significance. The results of the study showed that higher educational qualification enhance principals’ effectiveness in the management of their supervisory roles and staff personnel functions. Based on the findings, recommendations were made which include: Higher educational qualification be part of the yardstick for appointing teachers into principalship position; training opportunities be organized on regular basis for those promoted to the rank of principals; and those political sentiments be shelved by those saddled with the responsibility of managing schools to ensure effectiveness
