PRINCIPALS’ MANAGERIAL COMPETENCE AS A-FACTOR FOR TEACHERS’ PRODUCTIVITY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ENUGU EDUCATION ZONE

The study investigated principals’ managerial competence as a factor for teachers’ productivity in secondary schools in Enugu Education Zone of Enugu State. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The researcher adopted a descriptive survey research design for this study. The study was carried out in the public secondary schools in Enugu Education Zone. The population for the study consisted of all the 527 teachers and 31 principals in the 31 public secondary schools in Enugu Education Zone of Enugu State. There was no sampling because the population was manageable. The instrument for data collection was structured questionnaire validated by three research experts in Faculty of Education, ESUT. Cronbach alpha statistic was used for the reliability and the computation yielded 0.81 for cluster A and 0.79 for cluster B with an overall reliability index of 0.80 which indicated that the instrument was highly reliable. Mean scores and standard deviation were used for research questions while the null hypotheses were tested using t-test statistical method at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that the principals and teachers responded to a great extent that curriculum development is part of principals’ managerial competence which is a factor of teachers’ productivity, also the principals and teachers responded to a great extent that financial management is part of principals’ managerial capacity which is a factor of teachers’ productivity. Based on the findings, the study recommended that the government should encourage teachers to be involved in the various trainings, seminars and conferences in order to be acquainted in their disciplines. Also, in order to develop the school curriculum, teachers should always use the current syllabus provided by the Ministry of Education rather than using the old syllabus
